Slump-Free Cinnamon Raisin Bagels made with only 5 ingredients and a whole lot of love
If you’re looking for a bagel that doesn’t put you in a slump… this one’s for you.
Now, don’t get me wrong — I love bagels. I mean, who doesn’t love a bacon, egg, and cheese? (Especially a New York one.) But if I’m being honest with myself, every time I eat one I slump. Bad.
The best word I have for it is heavy… heavy in my stomach, heavy in my body, heavy in my energy.
And for me, using both outer knowledge (nutrition, digestion, blood sugar) and inner knowledge (how my body actually feels, what I crave, etc.), the pleasure of the bagel just doesn’t outweigh the sluggishness that follows.
So… I made these instead.
And let me tell you — life changing. Especially the cinnamon raisin ones. Even my dad loves them, which says a lot.
These are Greek yogurt bagels: higher in protein, more grounding, and way more supportive of sustained energy — without sacrificing the comfort factor.
Why These Bagels Feel Different
1. Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
Unbleached flour is less processed than its bleached counterpart, meaning it retains more of its natural structure. This can make it easier to digest for many people and helps the dough behave more naturally during baking. It’s still soft and satisfying, but without the overly refined feel that can leave you bloated or weighed down.
2. Full-Fat Greek Yogurt
This is the magic. Greek yogurt adds:
- Protein → helps stabilize blood sugar and keeps you fuller longer
- Healthy fats → slow digestion in a good way, preventing that crash
- Probiotics → support gut health and digestion
Swapping some of the refined carbs for protein and fat is what makes these bagels feel nourishing instead of draining.
3. Salt
Salt gets a bad reputation, but it’s essential. It enhances flavor, supports hydration and nerve function, and actually helps baked goods taste satisfying — which means you don’t feel the need to overeat to feel content.
4. Baking Powder
No yeast, no boiling, no waiting around all day. Baking powder gives these bagels their rise and soft interior, making them light but still hearty. It’s what keeps this recipe simple and approachable while still delivering that bagel-like texture.
The Result
A bagel that:
- Feels lighter in your body
- Keeps you full and energized
- Has more protein thanks to Greek yogurt
- Still tastes cozy, comforting, and indulgent
These are the kind of bagels you eat and then go live your life — not the kind you need to recover from.
